I want to have an active role in making sure that the Los Rios community college district provides our students with the opportunities they need to be successful. An average of 25% of students in the district graduate within the normal time. This is a low number, and I would like to do what I can to make sure the students are supported and successful. I also want to ensure that community college stays affordable, as its mission is that everyone who wants to attend, is able to attend. I would like to work collaboratively with businesses in the community towards workforce development programs, outreach and awareness. It is really important that the community be involved, as they are the heart of community colleges.

I bring a fresh perspective and insight, and am familiar with the developmental process of students as well as the expectations of teachers. I want to continue to be an active member of my community and to recognize the accomplishments of students.

Why I am running for office

Experience:

About Me

My name is Tami Nelson and I am a public school teacher in the Elk Grove Unified School District and a resident of east Elk Grove where I am raising my two children. I have led the School Site Council, volunteered as an Elk Grove Education Association Site Representative, and have run a small business.  I am currently serving on the Parent Teacher Fundraising Committee Board at my children’s school.  My family has been involved in the community with sports and music.

I have B.A. degrees in journalism and sociology, an M.A. degree in journalism, a single subject teaching credential in English, and a community college faculty preparation certificate.  While earning my certificate, I had the pleasure of teaching at Sacramento City College.

I strongly believe that all students, faculty, and the community deserve a voice. I would like to partner with schools to create a path to student success and increase educational opportunities.  We need to meet the needs of all community college students and ensure that they are provided with the best education and value.

I would be honored to serve as your Trustee and am asking for your vote.
